Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the 43rd Street Festival of the Arts

The 43rd Street Festival of the Arts  Saturday, September 17th 43rd Street, Forest Hill Neighborhood  Seventy selected regional artists and craftsmen will show and  sell their work accompanied by live music, locally  grown food, and special activities for children.  Proceeds from the festival will benefit Freedom House, a philanthropy that  provides shelter for the homeless. Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is the host for the seventh annual Music For Masseybenefit concert featuring The Waybacks with special guest Jim Lauderdale. 

The concert is presented by Dominion Virginia Power and all proceeds go to VCU Massey Cancer Center for Pediatric Cancer Research.

One Hundred Thousand Poets For Change & Chalking Poetry

Event Details	Want to be part of a historic, global poetry event? To date, 650 events in 450 cities and 95 countries will take place on September 24 to promote environmental, social, and political change through poetry. Poets, writers, artists will create, perform and demonstrate in their communities with a focus on peace and environmental sustainability. Poet and founder Michael Rothenberg started 100 Thousand Poets for Change to direct attention to dialog and away from violence. Richmond poets and readers of poetry -- teachers, students, and all poetic word lovers -- should find a poem or create one of their own. Choose a poem that celebrates positive living and a sustainable vision for the future. Meet at Cafe Ole in Carytown and chalk your poem in the parking lot or along the sidewalk. Get a friend or stranger to join in. Start a conversation. Share your love for poetic expression and your hopes for the planet. If you can't make it to Cafe Ole, write the poem on a wall, playground, or any other welcome public space. Take a picture and include it in the official website. Chop Suey 24hr Grillathon: Cookout with your Book Out!

Time Details	11am Saturday, September 10th  - 11am Sunday, September 11 Chop Suey Books will host Richmond's first and only 24 Hour Cookout. That's right, the flames will be raging throughout the day, into the night, and straight through until Sunday, September 11th at 11 am. That means you can visit for lunch, dinner, 4th meal, breakfast, and lunch again! All proceeds will be donated to Books On Wheels, Studio Two Three, and Helping Hands and more- so while you're getting creative on how to sneak a sixth visit in, these great non-profits will be figuring out great ways to spread these funds throughout Richmond. The grill will be overseen by organizer and cook Stephanie Failla. Grilling ingredients will be donated by the following generous restaurants:  Mamma Zu Sticky Rice Cafe Ole Bon Venu New York Deli Joe's Inn Mojos Cafe 821 The Nile Christopher's Runaway Gourmet,  Captain Slappy's Lamplighter This event will be held in conjunction with 26.2: An All-Write All-Night Writing Marathon organized by Richmond Young Writers and held at Chop Suey Books. You'll find opportunities for you to get involved in buying or selling affordable self-published zines to RVA! What’s a Zine? From Stolen Sharpie Revolution, and pronounced like magazine without the "maga-," a Zine is an independently created publication containing anything you want it to; personal experiences and stories, political ideologies, music related writing, gardening tips, fiction, travel stories, comics, photography, or anything you like. Zines can be put together by one person or a group of people and they are usually photocopied but can also be printed offset, letter press, or mimeographed. What’s a Zine Fest? A Zine fest is an event where zinesters (individual sellers as well as Zine Distro owners) meet up to sell and trade zines, as well as meet other zinesters. However, please note that trading is up to each individual zinester. A Zine fest is not a craft fair, comic book convention, or a book fair. Because zines are generally in the range of $1 to $5, you can expect to buy a lot of great reading material for a low price!
